As a Neuromuscular Therapist, I get to know my clients really well. Through many years of working with my clients at Sagewood Wellness Center, and my training in clinical psychology, I became aware of the fact that oftentimes, their physical condition was a result of something deeper. Stress, fear and anxiety can have a radical detrimental effect on the body and can cause a multitude of physical problems. Many times these conditions, and their symptoms, are treated with prescription medications which can compound the problem. This prompted me to integrate Holistic Counseling into my practice.
The techniques that I use in Holistic Counseling sessions (sometimes referred to as Integrated Mind-Body Therapy (IMBT) or Energy Psychology or (EP)) are based on both an understanding of clinical psychology and on working with the energy flow of the body. Holistic Counseling integrates established psychological practices with somatic methods derived from various healing traditions of Eastern cultures, as well muscle testing (Applied Kinesiology), to access and clear unconscious patterns which block optimal health.
At Sagewood Wellness Center, I assist clients through Holistic Counseling to balance the mind, body and spirit, heal old wounds and trauma and restore and improve healthy functioning. I utilize a variety of Energy Psychology methods to achieve rapid, dramatic and lasting therapeutic shifts in feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors, without the use of prescription drugs and medications.
Holistic Counseling can help alleviate a multitude of issues including:
- Weight Problems
- Limiting Beliefs
How it works
Study data suggests that psychological problems are a reflection of disturbed bio-energetic patterns within the mind-body system. Mind-body approaches to healing recognize a multi-layered interconnection between the body, the brain and the mind.
By addressing disturbances in thought and emotion while engaging the energy systems of the body through Energy Psychology interventions, Holistic Counseling allows for more rapid processing of a variety of emotional and/or physical conditions. For instance, an intervention known as EFT, or “tapping”, stimulates specific nerve endings within the body and sends signals directly to the emotional core of the brain known as the amygdala, which is responsible for the processing and memory of emotional reactions. Simply put, when these nerve endings are stimulated while the person is feeling/remembering an emotional response associated with a traumatic event, this stimulates the amygdala, resulting in rapid reduction of the fight/flight response within the brain. By doing so this concurrently stimulates the relaxation response. You cannot be in both fight/flight and relaxation mode at the same time. As a result, the emotional response (fear, anxiety, grief, etc.) to a traumatic event is neutralized and healing can occur.
Holistic Counseling may also provide tools to quickly assess unconscious resistances, promote readiness to change, release limiting beliefs and blocked emotions, and strengthen positive attitudes. This approach has also been found to support improvement in school, sports and work performance. Additionally, clients learn mind-body skills to self-regulate between sessions, reducing symptoms of stress, anxiety, anger, trauma, guilt, shame and depression.
An example of Holistic Counseling would be…
There is a woman who needs counseling for an intense fear of flying.
A few years prior, she was on a flight and the plane flew through turbulence which caused the plane to shake and rattle. It was short-lived, but after this, she developed a fear of flying and hadn’t been able to board a plane since. Through muscle testing, we discovered that when she was 5 years old, her parents discussed a plane crash which had occurred during a storm in which many people were killed. This caused her to become afraid that her parents would die if they went on a trip and flew somewhere, and she’d be an orphan with no one to take care of her.
As she grew older, this memory and ensuing fear faded but she was always uneasy about flying. When she was on the flight which went through some temporary turbulence, it triggered an unconscious memory of the discussion between her parents and, combined with her experience on the plane, created her phobia of flying.
She was a mother of a young child by this time, and her fear was that she would die in a crash and not be with her child to watch her grow. By utilizing Holistic Counseling techniques, we were able to clear her fear of flying (phobia) associated with the memory of her parent’s discussion, which was triggered by the turbulence on her flight, and she was then able to board a plane without fear.
Finding Your Path
I have a motto or catch phrase if you will. On many of my posts and social media, you’ll see it:
“Sagewood Wellness Center – Your Path to Wellness”
I believe that each one of us has an individual path that leads us to health and wellness. This couldn’t be more true as it pertains to Holistic Counseling. This is a thoughtful and transformative, medication-free process that allows my clients to find their individual path to healing in order to achieve inner peace and harmony.
